Welcome to Week 5 of our AP Cybersecurity self-study journey!
Follow these steps to guide your learning and track your progress:
1. Read the official topic. Review the relevant topic in the AP Cybersecurity Course and Exam Description (CED), and use this weekly workbook to track your learning.
2. Study the key concepts. Learn the required content and review the self-study notes posted immediately after the weekly workbook.
3. Demonstrate mastery. Complete each mastery task. Set its Status to Complete only when you can successfully perform the task and clearly explain the underlying concept.
4. Rate your confidence honestly. Before the exam, revisit any completed items with a Confidence rating of Low or Medium.

SELFSTUDY NOTES
In AP Cybersecurity, leveraging AI in cyber defense and collaborating with AI are key concepts to study. Attackers use AI, and defenders use it too. Here are the main points.
i. How does AI support system defense?
Three major applications of AI in security are:
- Configuration review: AI can review firewall rules and access controls and suggest safer settings.
- Code vulnerability analysis: AI can find vulnerabilities before software is deployed and suggest fixes, such as ways to prevent SQL injection.
- Detection rule generation: AI can quickly generate detection rules to help security teams identify new attack patterns.
ii. How does AI handle large volumes of data and respond to threats?
With millions of network events occurring each day, people cannot review them one by one. AI can analyze them at machine speed:
- Rapid event triage: Distinguish potentially malicious activity from normal traffic within seconds.
- Automated alerts and response: Trigger alerts and potentially block suspicious IP addresses or isolate infected systems.
- Rapid incident response: Help stop a threat before damage occurs.
iii. Example: AI assisted code review
Scenario: A company uses AI to conduct a security review before releasing a new application.
Finding: AI discovers that user input is copied directly into a database query. An attacker could exploit this flaw to alter the query or steal data.
Process: AI suggests a fix using parameterized queries → the development team reviews and tests it → the application is deployed.
iv. Key concept: Human–AI Collaboration
The guiding principle throughout this topic is that AI provides recommendations and assistance; people review the findings and make decisions. AI offers speed and pattern recognition, but it cannot replace human judgment and awareness of context.
Exam Tips: One of the course’s four core skills is Collaborate with AI. In an exam response, explain both AI’s strengths (speed, analysis at scale) and pattern recognition, and its limitations: its output needs expert review, may contain errors, and depends on its training data.
